How Do You Know You Have Bed Bugs?

• A physical sample of an actual bug or egg is required to be 100% certain

• Bite symptoms are a good indicator but cannot be diagnosed with 100% certainty. Some people have no reaction to bites while others break out in a rash or welts.

• The most effective inspections are conducted by a qualified pest management professional.

Bed bugs are not discriminatory, if you have blood, they will seek you out! They show up in a variety of places outside of private residences, such as college dorms, hotels, nursing homes, offices, schools and daycare centers, hospitals, public transportation and others. The majority of bed bug infestations occur in residential settings, such as apartments/condominiums and single-family homes. Bed bugs are a very difficult pest to treat, more so than cockroaches, ants and termites.

Bed bugs have been a household pest issue for more than 3,300 years, dating back to ancient Egypt. They were first brought to the United States by early colonists, where they thrived for many decades. Chicago has been named one of the worst cities for bed bugs! No one knows for certain what caused the resurgence of bed bugs in the United States. Contributing factors may include:

• Worldwide increase in bed bug activity

• More frequent introductions during travel

• Changes in pest management practices & resistance to pesticides

• Lack of public awareness is perpetuating the continued dispersal of bed bugs

Bed bugs are not known to spread any diseases to humans. However, their bites can leave behind itchy, red welts which can become infected from scratching.
